Meridian Bridge Yankton SD

Yankton's historic landmark since it's construction in 1924 was first promoted as 'the million dollar bridge', it was financed primarily with local capital. The bridge linked the Meridian Highway route, crossing the Missouri River, north-south from Winnipeg Canada to Mexico City Mexico. On October 11th, 2008 the historic Meridian Bridge closed permanently to automobile traffic and converted to recreational use. This photograph taken by LilyCrest's owner Cathy Clatworthy on Sunday September 28, 2008 preserves that moment in time. Historically significant, her last few glorious days of operation bringing visitors, trade & commerce into Yankton for 84 years made way for the new Discovery Bridge.
